Sir Keir Starmer is addressing MPs in the Commons as he seeks to explain how he was not aware Peter Mandelson had failed his security vetting before taking up his post as the UK’s ambassador to Washington.
This comes against a backdrop of calls for his resignation, and claims he has misled parliament.
Starmer has insisted he is "furious" no Foreign Office official told him they had granted Mandelson security clearance despite him failing vetting – a fact the department’s top civil servant, Sir Olly Robbins, lost his job over.
