US President Donald Trump has cancelled all meetings with Iranian officials in response to the country’s severe crackdown on anti-government protests.
Widespread protests against Iran’s ruling regime, which began on December 28, have been met with a harsh government crackdown that activists say has left more than 2,000 people dead.
Trump on Tuesday urged Iranian protesters to “take over” state institutions, telling them that “help is on its way”.
"Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING – TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price," he wrote on Truth Social.
"I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS WAY. MIGA!!!"
Later, as he toured an auto factory in Michigan, Trump declined to explain what he meant by ‘help is on its way’.
"You’re going to have to figure that one out," he said.
