'We cannot presume there are deaths' says Jamaica's local government minister

Hurricane Melissa, the most powerful hurricane of the year so far, has hit Cuba after ripping through Jamaica. The Category 5 hurricane, which has now been downgraded, has left a trail of destruction in Jamaica.

Desmond McKenzie, Jamaica’s local government minister, says it’s too early to report on fatalities caused by Melissa.

"We are not in a position to speak about any deaths, as we have not had any reports about any deaths so far," he says.

He adds: "We are not in a position to make an official statement on deaths because we’ve not received any such information."
