Cousin marriage. A practice most Britons never think about—but one causing significant problems within parts of the country’s Pakistani community. Linked to birth defects, clannism and even grooming gangs, cousin marriage is fuelling a fierce debate over whether Britain should finally ban it. And nowhere is the issue more visible than in Bradford. While 40 to 60 percent of British Pakistanis marry cousins, in parts of Bradford’s Pakistani community the rate is above 90 percent. By contrast, fewer than 0.05 percent of White locals in Bradford marry their cousins. I asked locals what they thought.
