We visited the city that hasn't seen the sun in 21 days | ITV News

Aberdeen, on Scotland’s northeast coast, has faced perhaps the very worst of the dreary weather gripping the UK at the moment.

Locals there haven’t seen the sun for 21 days. That’s the longest period since records began nearly 70 years ago.

We went to see how people there are managing the grey days – and we even caught a glimpse of the sun reappearing, if only for half an hour.

And, after seemingly endless rain, cloud and average temperatures, winter will snap back over the next few days with snow and ice warnings already issued – but why is it suddenly turning colder?

Essentially, it’s all down to a change in wind direction.

We’ve been drawing in a mild, wet, cloudy airmass from the southwest for weeks, but over the next 24 hours, winds will back north/northeasterly, drawing in colder, clearer air from the Arctic.

This clearer air will give us sunshine by day (especially on Saturday) and allow heat to escape quickly overnight – hence frost and ice likely once the sun sets.
