A special eyewitness account from the centre of one of the world’s biggest humanitarian crises.
ITV News has travelled to a part of war-torn South Sudan where people are facing catastrophic malnutrition and are close to famine.
We journeyed into Upper Nile State in the north of the country, where a combination of conflict, flooding, damage to crops, and loss of livestock has left many starving.
It comes as South Sudan faces one of its most serious political and security crisis since the peace agreement in 2018, which ended the civil war.
Tensions between forces loyal to the country’s President and opposition fighters have erupted in the area, displacing many from their homes and leaving hospitals and schools looted.
The conflict has made it almost impossible for humanitarian organisations to access areas needing aid, and could push the region into full-blown famine.
In some cases aid convoys themselves have been attacked.
Cuts to international aid budgets – including the UK and the US – are also having an impact.
Our Senior International Correspondent John Irvine saw for himself the desperate conditions in Upper Nile State, as health officials try their best to help.
