Ramla Ali’s family fled Somalia’s civil war when she was a toddler after her 12-year-old brother was killed by an explosive. As refugees, they settled in East London, where Ali learnt how to box. She later competed for Somalia at the Olympics in Tokyo while also building a career in modelling, filmmaking, and activism. Her life story is now being told in a new biopic, In the Shadows, starring Jasmine Jobson of Top Boy and MobLand. Ali explains why she believes Jobson is the right person to play her.
