US President Donald Trump will be visiting Beijing this week. Taiwan will inevitably come up when he meets his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.
The Chairwoman of the Kuomintang (KMT), the opposition party in Taiwan, is riding high on the notoriety she has gained from her meeting last month with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
A lot has changed in the decade since the KMT last met with the Communist leader in 2016, and in the words of the chairwoman, the island "is now at a critical crossroads, a pivotal moment that will determine whether cross-strait relations veer towards peace or war".
She came into her leadership role in November last year and has prioritised a meeting with Xi and re-engaging in dialogue with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
ITV News also met with Taiwan’s Deputy Foreign Minister ahead of the Trump-Xi summit, and he told me Taiwan won’t be threatened into reunification, and that it was a mistake of Cheng Li-wun not to have conveyed that message clearly to Xi Jinping.
Chen Ming-chi said the KMT did not speak for the majority of Taiwanese people and accused the her of only echoing the view of China.
