Turkish authorities have detained more than 1,000 protesters and several journalists after the arrest of Istanbul’s mayor – who is a key political rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan – triggered nationwide protests.
On Sunday, a court formally arrested Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu on corruption charges and ordered him to be imprisoned pending trial.
