At the same time the Prime Minister is under pressure, from inside and outside his own party, to scrap a policy introduced in 2017 by the Conservative government.

The two child limit on benefits means parents can only claim tax credits and universal credit for the first two children in their family. Latest figures show that 1.6million children are affected by the policy. Families with more than two children are losing up to £3,500 a year, per child, in benefit support. Despite common misconceptions, 59% of families affected by the policy are in work. Current estimates suggest that it could cost the government as much as £3.6 billion per year to scrap the limit.

We’ve been talking to two Labour MPs from Durham and Liverpool to hear their misgivings about the cap.
