Even those who were convinced, that America would join Israel’s bombing of Iran, were surprised by the scale, speed, and stealth of last night’s assault.
More than 125 US aircraft, and dozens of missiles and bombs, helped strike three Iranian nuclear sites. Fighter jets, stealth bombers, and a submarine were all involved.
Donald Trump claimed it had left key enrichment facilities "totally obliterated". And tonight he insisted it had taken nuclear weapons right out of the Iranians’ hands.
In truth, the full impact remains unclear. What is clear is that Washington – whilst saying it does not seek war – has dramatically upped the stakes.
A furious Tehran warned of "everlasting consequences", in response. A wary world must now wait to see what that will entail.
