It came after the Greek PM said the Parthenon sculptures, removed from Greece by the British diplomat Lord Elgin in the early 19th century, were ‘essentially stolen’ and urged the UK to return them to Greece, in a BBC interview on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.
