What is the Edinburgh tourist tax and who pays it?

Edinburgh has become the first city in Scotland to introduce a ‘tourist tax’, charging an additional 5% on the cost of accommodation for those staying in the city overnight.

The fee is applied to hotels, bed and breakfasts, and self-catering accommodation in the Scottish capital.

Supporters of the fee claim the additional money raised could be used to fund improvements that would benefit local communities.

Others fear it may put people off visiting altogether, in what can already be an expensive city to visit.
