
Nicolás Maduro has appeared in court in New York charged with drug trafficking, after his capture almost three months ago by US special forces.
He denies the charges against him, but has spent most of 2026 in a jail cell.
So what is happening back home? Venezuela is being governed by an interim president, Delcy Rodríguez. She was Maduro’s deputy, and is now toeing a very precarious diplomatic line, trying to appease Donald Trump while retain the support of her socialist base.
