The voters of Makerfield will soon head to the polls to vote in what has been described as one of the UK’s most consequential byelections.
Polls have consistently predicted it will be a race between Labour and Reform UK, with the result of the vote on June 18 potentially paving the way for the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, to challenge the prime minister in a future leadership race.
With an increased focus on Makerfield, commentators have joked that its population have all been voxed at least twice over.
But away from the barrage of political think pieces, what do they really think about the current occupant of Number 10 Downing Street, the man hoping to replace him, and the plumber seeking to send him back to the Manchester mayoralty with his tail between his legs.
ITV News Political Editor Robert Peston spent time with a focus group commissioned by campaign group 38 Degrees, and carried out by JL Partners, to hear how voters felt with the eyes of the world focused on their Wigan constituency – spoiler, they rather like it!
