The Met Office warned that gusts up to 70mph will be felt ‘fairly widely’ while ‘more exposed areas’ could see winds of up to 100mph.

Schools across a large part of Northern Ireland have been told to close early as Storm Amy brings damaging winds to the island.

The closures are in counties Antrim, Londonderry, Tyrone and Fermanagh, the Education Authority has said.

The Met Office has issued an amber wind warning for Northern Ireland as it faces gusts reaching 60 to 70mph and up to 80mph in coastal areas.

The warning will remain in force until 8pm on Friday, which may cause widespread disruption for commuters.

The first named storm of the season has also prompted weather warnings throughout Britain for heavy rain and strong winds of up to 95mph.
