The White House says Donald Trump warned Qatar that Israel was about to launch a strike on a group of Hamas leaders meeting in Doha.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the US "feels badly" about the attack but said strikes against Hamas were "worthy".
The US president told the Emir of Qatar "such a thing will not happen again on their soil".
Hamas said its senior leaders survived the Israeli strike but some members of the organisation were killed.
