“Nigel is mad to accept his money” – those were the words of the Conservative peer Emma Nicholson to the Guardian investigations correspondent Tom Burgis over a slice of cake in the House of Lords. She was talking about Christopher Harborne, a crypto-tycoon bankrolling Farage’s Reform UK party.

The mysterious billionaire has donated more than £22m to Farage’s rightwing party over the past seven years, accounting for two-thirds of all funding received by Reform UK, previously called the Brexit party.
Asked last December about the issue, Farage said Harborne wanted “absolutely nothing in return at all” for his donations. However, Farage has championed cryptocurrency, saying London “should become a global trading centre for this stuff”.
Harborne is, his lawyers say, an “intensely private person” but a months-long investigation by the Guardian can reveal much more about his background and possible motivations than previously reported.
In this video, Burgis highlights key parts of his reporting ► https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/apr/25/christopher-harborne-mystery-billionaire-bankrolling-reform-uk-nigel-farage
