The conservative, often described as Venezuela’s Iron Lady, has spent the past year in hiding after her political movement was widely believed to have beaten the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, in the July 2024 presidential election. ‘In the past year, Miss Machado has been forced to live in hiding. Despite serious threats against her life, she has remained in the country, a choice that has inspired millions,’ said the committee.
But some Venezuelans distrust her as a result of thinly veiled calls for a foreign military intervention to unseat Maduro. Others are suspicious of her ties to right-wing politicians such as Trump and Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro
