New York City has elected Zohran Mamdani as its next mayor in a historic victory. At just 34, Mamdani will become the youngest person in more than a century to hold the office, as well as the city’s first Muslim mayor, first of South Asian heritage, and first born in Africa.
Surging on the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, Mamdani ran on a platform focused on empowering working-class New Yorkers and challenging the influence of Donald Trump, whom he directly addressed during his victory speech.
With voter turnout reaching the highest levels in over 50 years, his win signals a major shift in the city’s political landscape.
