The first tranche of measures in the government’s long-awaited Renters’ Rights Act will come into force next May, including a ban on no-fault evictions, rent increases more than once a year and bidding wars between prospective tenants.
The Act – which was given Royal Assent and became law last month – builds on years of campaigning by housing groups and promises to tackle poor housing standards and discrimination in the rental market.
Ministers have set out a timeline for implementing the Act on Friday, with the aim of giving landlords and letting agents time to see through the changes for their tenants.
Here, ITV News explains when the changes will come into force, some of the key points in the Act’s sweeping package of measures and looks at whether the changes will lead to price hikes.
