Why didn’t Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle chair the Budget?

As Rachel Reeves presented her second Budget to the House of Commons, it was Nusrat Ghani – not Sir Lindsay Hoyle – who presided over the Chamber.

Hoyle’s absence from Budget statements follows a long-standing parliamentary convention: the speaker traditionally steps back, leaving the session to be overseen by a deputy speaker, specifically the chairman of Ways and Means.
