Following the deposition of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, U.S. President Donald Trump has said "American dominance in the Western hemisphere will never be questioned again".
He has framed the Venezuelan intervention as an assertion of U.S. dominance – explicitly invoking the Monroe Doctrine from 1823 – which he has dubbed the “Donroe Doctrine.”
Trump has already indicated this raid could be followed up by a wider wave of attacks if the regime doesn’t stand aside for the opposition – and that America will run Venezuela in the meantime.
So why has a 200-year-old document resurfaced? And what could it mean for the rest of the world?
