Over 120 billion servings of instant noodles were consumed last year… and they’re now being eaten in places you might not expect.
China led the charge consuming over 45 billion in 2022, India came in fourth with seven and a half billion servings whilst Mexico’s demand exploded taking 15th place in world rankings.
They were invented by Momofuku Ando in 1958.
He worked from his shed in Japan to create a ramen to combat food shortages after WW2, and the noodles would eventually become relatively inexpensive.
And it’s thought that’s why their demand has exploded again recently…in the face of a global cost of living crisis.
Ramen brand Nissin were quoted saying due to inflation, ‘middle-class consumers’ are eating more and more of their products.
It’s leading them and other food manufacturers to invest in new plants in Europe and the US to cope with "unprecedented demand".
