A joint operation between the UK and Thailand has found that more than 50 British nationals have been arrested for attempting to smuggle cannabis in the last year.
In May, two young British women made headlines after they were arrested in third countries for drug related charges after travelling to Thailand on holiday.
Bella May Culley, an 18-year-old from County Durham, was arrested in Georgia for allegedly importing a large amount of narcotics into the eastern European country. She has denied the charges.
And 21-year-old Charlotte May Lee from South London was arrested in Sri Lanka after travelling from Thailand. Police allegedly found 46 kilograms of the synthetic drug kush in her suitcases – she’s insisted they were planted on her.
Both cases have made headlines in the UK, although there’s no indication they’re linked.
ITV News spoke to Christopher Stacey, the CEO of Prisoners Abroad, about whats behind the rise and what advice he’d give to young people planning to travel to Thailand.
