Why is India’s ‘Cockroach’ Party protesting again?

Supporters of India’s Cockroach Janta Party took to the streets of Mumbai on October 2, protesting for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The unrest comes after The Indian Express newspaper reported two of the three election commissioners had formally objected to several decisions involving voter list revisions, which could leave voter lists in some regions shrinking by as much as 30%. Critics allege the revisions benefit Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The commission has disputed the report, saying the objective of the reforms is to remove duplicate entries while ensuring eligible voters remain on the lists.

The Electoral Commission and Modi’s party have rejected the allegations.
