Why is Pope Leo visiting Turkey on his first foreign trip? | DW News

Pope Leo’s first overseas trip as pontiff is taking him to the small town of Iznik in Turkey because of its importance to Christianity. The Vatican is describing it as a “pilgrimage.”
Leo is the fifth pope to visit Turkey. (His next destination after Turkey is Lebanon which is home to a vibrant Christian community.)
