Why Putin needs to annex 'official' parts of Russia in the Donbas | DW News

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have spoken on the phone about the next steps toward a resolution of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Their conversation comes ahead of an expected meeting between the American and Russian presidents in Hungary. Speaking to journalists on board Air Force One on Sunday, Donald Trump outlined some of his ideas for how a ceasefire could be achieved.
A report by the Financial Times suggests that Vladimir Putin wants a final deal that involves changes to the current front lines. Moscow is reportedly willing to give up small areas of the two southern front-line regions – shown here in yellow. Meanwhile, Putin is said to want full control of the eastern Donbas region, made up of Donetsk and Luhansk – shown here in green. The Financial Times said Trump relayed Russia’s demands to Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy when they met at the White House on Friday – and that the meeting "descended many times into a shouting match," with Trump reportedly urging Ukraine’s president to accept Putin’s terms or be QUOTE "destroyed" by Russia.
