Half a million Palestinians in Gaza are set to lose food assistance from the UN World Food Programme as funding shortages force major cuts. The WFP is reducing the number of people receiving monthly assistance from 1.6 million to 1.1 million, while food rations are being halved.
A year after a ceasefire came into effect in Gaza, around two-thirds of its population still face crisis levels of food insecurity or worse. The WFP says the reductions are driven by a lack of funding, not declining humanitarian needs or an inability to bring food into Gaza.
DW News speaks to Michael Fakhri, professor of law at the University of Oregon and former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, about why Gaza remains so dependent on humanitarian assistance, the responsibility of international donors, and the long-term consequences of hunger for Palestinian families.
