Steep new US tariffs on steel and aluminium imports have come into effect. President Donald Trump surprised countries around the world last week by announcing he would double tariffs on metal imports to 50 percent. About a quarter of all the steel used in the US is imported – and Trump says the levies will provide a much needed boost to US steel producers. Economists say tariffs on metals risk slowing US manufacturing, because they raise prices for factories.
