Why victims of waste crime are being ordered to pay for cleanup

When an 80-year-old farmer found out that illegal fly tippers had left a huge pile of waste on his land, he reported it.

The elderly widower, who wanted to stay anonymous, was promptly landed with a £40,000 bill to clean it up.

Now, thanks to a crowdfunding appeal, it took just a couple of days to raise the funds to cover it. The National Farmers Union described fly tipping as ‘out of control’ – with victims of the crime bearing the cost of clearing up the rubbish.
