The UK Met Office has confirmed Thursday, May 1 to be the warmest start to May since records began.
Writing on X, it confirmed temperatures of 28 degrees had been recorded at Kew Gardens, beating the previous 1990 record of 27.4 degrees recorded in Lossiemouth.
This is now the warmest May 1 since 1860.
It follows a damning report by the government’s climate advisory group on Wednesday, warning that the UK was failing to adapt to climate change.
ITV News has spoken to one expert who said the country should be prepared for more extreme weather.
