Former Chief Nursing Officer Dame Sarah Mullally has been named as the Archbishop of Canterbury, making her the first woman to be appointed to the role in the Church of England’s history.
ITV News’ Julie Etchingham has sat down with the new Archbishop to discuss her upcoming role in the Church and what it means for its future having a woman stepping into the role for the first time.
Dame Sarah will confirm her position as the Church’s top bishop in a legal ceremony in January, followed by a formal enthronement service attended by members of the royal family, which will take place at a later date.
She succeeds Reverend Justin Welby, who announced he would be stepping down over safeguarding failings almost a year ago.
