Will protest rallies in Ladakh end with more rights or more violence?

Thousands of people in the Himalayan region of Ladakh have spent the week protesting, demanding statehood from the Indian government for their disputed territory, which lies between Pakistan and China. It comes six months after security forces cracked down on violent clashes in the capital of Leh – claiming ‘an unruly mob of protestors attacked police’.

The Indian government claims to be “actively engaged” on the issue of statehood and they previously accused the movement’s leader, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, of fomenting violence and jailed him. Last week, he was released.

Filmmaker Surabhi Tandon has this report on the aftermath of the crackdown, and the new mood of hope for change.
