Women’s Institute BANS transgender women from becoming members

The Women’s Institute says it will ban transgender women from becoming members — announcing the change will take effect from April next year.

The organisation says it’s acting with “regret and sadness”, but that April’s Supreme Court ruling on biological sex leaves it with "no legal choice" if it wants to remain a recognised women’s charity.

Chief executive, Melissa Green, says the WI has proudly welcomed trans women for more than 40 years — and insists “transgender women are women” — but formal membership will now be restricted to biological women only.
