{"id":261638,"date":"2025-07-14T18:04:50","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T17:04:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsisc.com\/videos\/constance-marten-and-mark-gordon-convicted-of-gross-negligence-manslaughter-of-their-baby-itv-news\/"},"modified":"2025-07-14T18:04:50","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T17:04:50","slug":"constance-marten-and-mark-gordon-convicted-of-gross-negligence-manslaughter-of-their-baby-itv-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsisc.com\/videos\/constance-marten-and-mark-gordon-convicted-of-gross-negligence-manslaughter-of-their-baby-itv-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Constance Marten and Mark Gordon convicted of gross negligence manslaughter of their baby | ITV News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i4.ytimg.com\/vi\/CGWq0dFZMDY\/hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Constance Marten and Mark Gordon convicted of gross negligence manslaughter of their baby | ITV News\"><br \/> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CGWq0dFZMDY\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>Aristocrat Constance Marten and her partner Mark Gordon have been convicted of the gross negligence manslaughter of their newborn baby.<\/p>\n<p>Marten, 38, and Gordon, 51, went on the run with daughter Victoria in early 2023 after their four other children were taken into care.<\/p>\n<p>Police had launched a nationwide hunt after their car burst into flames on the motorway near Bolton, Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>The couple travelled across England and went off-grid, sleeping in a tent on the South Downs where baby Victoria died.<\/p>\n<p>After seven weeks on the run, the defendants were arrested in Brighton, East Sussex.<\/p>\n<p>Following a desperate search, police found their baby dead amid rubbish inside a Lidl bag in a disused shed nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria\u2019s remains were too badly decomposed to establish the cause of death.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution said she died from hypothermia in the cold and damp conditions inside the flimsy tent or was smothered.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants claimed their daughter\u2019s death was a tragic accident after Marten fell asleep on her.<\/p>\n<p>A jury in their retrial found Marten and Gordon unanimously guilty of manslaughter on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In their first trial last year, the defendants were convicted of perverting the course of justice, concealing the birth of a child and child cruelty.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford of Scotland Yard, said: \u201cToday, the justice we have long fought for has been finally been served for baby Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe selfish actions of Mark Gordon and Constance Marten resulted in the death of a newborn baby who should have had the rest of her life ahead of her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The senior officer said Victoria\u2019s death was \u201ccompletely avoidable\u201d as the defendant had plenty of opportunities to \u201cdo the right thing\u201d and ask for help.<\/p>\n<p>In light of the conviction, the family court decision to take Marten\u2019s four other children into care was \u201cshown to be right\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Subscribe to ITV News on YouTube: http:\/\/bit.ly\/2lOHmNj<br \/>\n\u2022 Get breaking news and more stories at http:\/\/www.itv.com\/news<\/p>\n<p>Follow ITV News on TikTok https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@itvnews?lang=en<br \/>\nFollow ITV News on Instagram: https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/itvnews\/<br \/>\nFollow ITV News on Facebook: https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/itvnews\/<br \/>\nFollow ITV News on X: https:\/\/twitter.com\/itvnews<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aristocrat Constance Marten and her partner Mark Gordon have been convicted of the gross negligence manslaughter of their newborn baby.
