{"id":314066,"date":"2026-01-30T21:00:54","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T21:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsisc.com\/videos\/an-nhs-whistleblower-tells-us-about-chaotic-hospital-care-itv-news\/"},"modified":"2026-01-30T21:00:54","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T21:00:54","slug":"an-nhs-whistleblower-tells-us-about-chaotic-hospital-care-itv-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsisc.com\/videos\/an-nhs-whistleblower-tells-us-about-chaotic-hospital-care-itv-news\/","title":{"rendered":"An NHS whistleblower tells us about chaotic hospital care | ITV News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i4.ytimg.com\/vi\/OxW3XZAzV0Q\/hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"An NHS whistleblower tells us about chaotic hospital care | ITV News\"><br \/> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OxW3XZAzV0Q\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>An NHS whistleblower has told ITV News that patients are \u201cdying in corridors\u201d because of a lack of available hospital beds.<\/p>\n<p>Our investigation into so-called corridor care in NHS hospitals has exposed \u201cchaotic\u201d conditions for patients and staff, not confined to the traditionally busy winter months.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, there were almost 5,000 deaths associated with long A&amp;E waits, according to analysis by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, shared exclusively with ITV News.<\/p>\n<p>An A&amp;E worker spoke anonymously to ITV News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday I walked through A&amp;E and there were patients upon patients on oxygen in the corridors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s embarrassing to work for the NHS. It&#8217;s heartbreaking, it\u2019s depressing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Increasingly, hospital patients are being treated in non-clinical areas, such as corridors, cupboards or offices, while they wait for a bed on a ward to become available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel ashamed that I&#8217;m allowing patients to be treated in this way,\u201d the NHS staff member told ITV News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like it&#8217;s normal &#8211; and it&#8217;s not normal. Patients are dying in corridors, and we\u2019re just watching people die, and there\u2019s nothing we can do about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Bernard Parkinson, 75, from Chorley in Lancashire, spent three days on a hospital corridor while he was being treated for sepsis.<\/p>\n<p>It happened last August &#8211; not during the usually pressured winter period.<\/p>\n<p>Bernard\u2019s daughter, Sharron Smith, described their experience at Royal Preston Hospital as \u201ccarnage\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were people everywhere. The staff were running up and down. There was no privacy at all,\u201d Sharron told ITV News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was horrendous. We were in tears most of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, Dr Ian Higginson, described the findings as \u201cappalling\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is absolutely rock-solid evidence that long waits in the emergency departments are associated with an increased risk of dying &#8211; and that&#8217;s what really worries us,\u201d Dr Higginson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last two shifts I&#8217;ve worked in my emergency department, I\u2019ve had very senior nurses in tears at the state of what\u2019s going on &#8211; and at times I feel like crying too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel sorry for the patients. We could do a really good job for our patients, but it\u2019s so hard to do that when our department is so full.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: \u201cThe care Mr Parkinson received was completely unacceptable and should not happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile there have been clear improvements this winter \u2013 with faster ambulance handovers, shorter delays and fewer hospital beds occupied by flu patients \u2013 it is deeply concerning that some people are still being treated in corridors.
