{"id":344834,"date":"2026-05-19T15:00:26","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T14:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsisc.com\/videos\/how-this-nhs-hospital-modernised-its-way-out-of-a-crisis\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T15:00:26","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T14:00:26","slug":"how-this-nhs-hospital-modernised-its-way-out-of-a-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsisc.com\/videos\/how-this-nhs-hospital-modernised-its-way-out-of-a-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"How this NHS hospital modernised its way out of a crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i4.ytimg.com\/vi\/gTuDDMZmd_o\/hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"How this NHS hospital modernised its way out of a crisis\"><br \/> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gTuDDMZmd_o\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>The corridors of the A&amp;E department at Watford General Hospital in Hertfordshire were once lined with dozens of patients, waiting hours, or even days, for a bed on a ward. <\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, there would regularly be up to 28 patients left on trolleys in the crowded corridors, seven days a week. <\/p>\n<p>But today, the hospital\u2019s hallways are clear and quiet. <\/p>\n<p>In recent months, there have been no cases of so-called \u2018corridor care\u2019, despite record demand this winter. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number one thing that we\u2019ve changed here is the culture &#8211; the culture of accepting,\u201d Chief Nurse Kelly McGovern told ITV News. <\/p>\n<p>McGovern said \u2018corridor care\u2019 had become normalised, but now there\u2019s been a shift in mindset and staff aim to treat every patient like their own family member. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s actually soul-destroying to be nursing in a corridor, so we\u2019ve allowed our staff to say it\u2019s not ok and we won\u2019t continue to do it,\u201d explained McGovern. <\/p>\n<p>The hospital has managed to improve A&amp;E waiting times, moving from 102nd in the NHS league tables in 2022, to now being in the top 10. <\/p>\n<p>Gary Carmont, 76, has diabetes and regularly needs to visit the hospital. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was one of those patients in the corridor. It was cold and it was very noisy, because it wasn\u2019t equipped,\u201d Gary told ITV News. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nurses did a good job, but it\u2019s much more organised now.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>When nurse EJ Llamas arrived to work at Watford General Hospital from the Philippines, he was shocked at the NHS he found. <\/p>\n<p>Treating patients in corridors was so demoralising for him, he even considered leaving the profession <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was draining,\u201d EJ told ITV News. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you see patients suffering, I wasn\u2019t satisfied. I was giving them treatment, but not the holistic care I\u2019m meant to give.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Data analysis has played a big part in the hospital\u2019s success. <\/p>\n<p>They now have a control room with floor to ceiling screens displaying real-time data on patients and bed availability. <\/p>\n<p>They have even borrowed techniques from Heathrow Airport to transform how patients flow through the hospital. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you can see all around me are screens showing real-time information that track the patients&#8217; journey through our hospital,\u201d explained Rachel Thorman, Chief Operating Officer at the West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can match up the patients that need a bed with the beds that we\u2019re got coming available.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>But the secret to tackling corridor care has not just been about changes within the hospital walls.  <\/p>\n<p>The Trust has teamed up with other parts of the health system, like the ambulance service.  <\/p>\n<p>When ambulance crews have a suspected stroke patient they can use iPads to video call doctors based at the hospital to help remotely diagnose them, so that they can be fast-tracked to the right specialist team, avoiding any delays in A&amp;E.  <\/p>\n<p>The government has promised to eradicate \u2018corridor care\u201d in England by 2029. <\/p>\n<p>The Department of Health has pledged to deploy \u201cexpert teams\u201d to the worst affected hospitals, to provide support and leadership. <\/p>\n<p>In March 2026, NHS England published a definition of \u2018corridor care\u2019 for the first time to allow trusts to begin collecting data on the problem, which is due to be published later this month. <\/p>\n<p>The teams at Watford General Hospital are optimistic others can learn from what they\u2019ve achieved. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can be done.
