{"id":358568,"date":"2026-07-06T10:00:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T09:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsisc.com\/videos\/will-this-new-pill-replace-weight-loss-jabs-for-patients-in-the-uk\/"},"modified":"2026-07-06T10:00:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T09:00:17","slug":"will-this-new-pill-replace-weight-loss-jabs-for-patients-in-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsisc.com\/videos\/will-this-new-pill-replace-weight-loss-jabs-for-patients-in-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Will this new pill replace weight loss jabs for patients in the UK?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.ytimg.com\/vi\/uH8gdMBwKlE\/hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Will this new pill replace weight loss jabs for patients in the UK?\"><br \/> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uH8gdMBwKlE\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>The launch of a new weight loss pill in the UK is an &quot;exciting&quot; milestone as the country faces an obesity \u201cticking bomb\u201d, the boss of Wegovy has told ITV News.<\/p>\n<p>The Wegovy pill, made by Novo Nordisk, is the first GLP-1 tablet to be approved in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>ITV News has been given exclusive access to the factory in Copenhagen manufacturing the pills destined for the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The once-a-day semaglutide pill is prescription-only and is now available privately in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Pharmacists or doctors can prescribe it to adults with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 30, or to those who are overweight and have a related health condition, such as high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is very little understanding that this is a chronic disease,\u201d Mike Doustdar, the CEO of Novo Nordisk, said in an exclusive interview with ITV News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the pill is giving people more options &#8211; so it&#8217;s really exciting for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Novo Nordisk is now producing millions of the tablets every week for British patients.<\/p>\n<p>In his first interview with a UK broadcaster, the boss of the pharmaceutical company described the fact that there are 16 million adults in the UK living with obesity as \u201cstaggering\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a ticking bomb,&quot; Mr Doustdar said. &quot;It has to start getting addressed today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Around 1.6 million people in the UK have used weight loss injections.<\/p>\n<p>It is thought that oral GLP-1s, with no need for refrigeration or needles, could be more convenient for people who need to lose weight for health reasons.<\/p>\n<p>The medication works by reducing food cravings and helping people feel fuller by mimicking the natural hormone released after eating.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Doustdar denied that the pill was a \u201cpanacea\u201d for obesity but insisted it would provide people with \u201coptionality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A private prescription for Wegovy injections can cost hundreds of pounds a month, so it was hoped the pill version of the drug might provide a more affordable alternative.<\/p>\n<p>However, Mr Doustdar revealed to us that the pill is \u201cnot cheaper\u201d to manufacture than their injection pens, dampening hopes that the tablets will cost less, though he insisted that Novo Nordisk\u2019s obesity drugs are not just \u201cfor the rich\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The pill has not yet been assessed for use on the NHS.<\/p>\n<p>Novo Nordisk says it will share the data on \u201cthe benefits\u201d and \u201cthe side effects\u201d with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the organisation that decides which medicines are funded by the NHS.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Subscribe to ITV News on YouTube: http:\/\/bit.ly\/2lOHmNj<br \/>\n\u2022 Get breaking news and more stories at http:\/\/www.itv.com\/news<\/p>\n<p>Follow ITV News on TikTok https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@itvnews?lang=en<br \/>\nFollow ITV News on Instagram: https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/itvnews\/<br \/>\nFollow ITV News on Facebook: https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/itvnews\/<br \/>\nFollow ITV News on X: https:\/\/twitter.com\/itvnews<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The launch of a new weight loss pill in the UK is an &quot;exciting&quot; milestone as the country faces an obesity \u201cticking bomb\u201d, the boss of Wegovy has told ITV News.
