{"id":373776,"date":"2026-08-28T01:00:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T00:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsisc.com\/videos\/the-story-of-ratko-mladic-the-infamous-butcher-of-bosnia\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T01:00:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T00:00:16","slug":"the-story-of-ratko-mladic-the-infamous-butcher-of-bosnia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsisc.com\/videos\/the-story-of-ratko-mladic-the-infamous-butcher-of-bosnia\/","title":{"rendered":"The story of Ratko Mladi\u0107, the infamous &#8216;Butcher of Bosnia&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.ytimg.com\/vi\/JboWX_drMJc\/hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"The story of Ratko Mladi\u0107, the infamous 'Butcher of Bosnia'\"><br \/> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JboWX_drMJc\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>Ex-Bosnian Serb warlord, Ratko Mladi\u0107, dubbed the &#8216;butcher of Bosnia&#8217;, has died in prison aged 84.<\/p>\n<p>Mladi\u0107 was serving a life sentence in prison in The Hague for genocide and other war crimes committed in Bosnia during the Yugoslav war.<\/p>\n<p>The ruthless former communist officer was one of the most notorious figures in the 1990s war in Yugoslavia &#8211; a conflict that left more than 100,000 people dead and more than one million homeless.<\/p>\n<p>He commanded his troops to \u201cscorch the brains\u201d of the Bosnian Muslims and boasted of being a \u201cSerbian God\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A family member confirmed his death and said Mladi\u0107\u2019s son, Darko Mladi\u0107, was on the way to The Hague.<\/p>\n<p>The UN confirmed his death.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2017, the United Nations sentenced Mladi\u0107 to life in prison for masterminding genocide and other atrocities throughout Bosnia&#8217;s 1992-95 war. He had been in custody since 2011 after many years on the run.<\/p>\n<p>Judges found him guilty of orchestrating a campaign of &quot;ethnic cleansing&quot; to drive Muslims and Bosnians out of key areas to create a Greater Serbia as Yugoslavia tore itself apart after the fall of communism.<\/p>\n<p>Named the &#8216;Butcher of the Balkans&#8217;, Mladi\u0107 was responsible for the murder of more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica in 1995, which was considered one of the worst massacres in Europe since the Second World War.<\/p>\n<p>Many survivors travelled to The Hague to witness the verdict on the genocidal crimes they survived.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Mladi\u0107 lost an appeal against his conviction and continued to serve his sentence in The Hague. He was one of the few people to be convicted of genocide.<\/p>\n<p>His toxic legacy continues to divide Bosnia.
