More than 400,000 people are expected to attend the public festival, which runs through Sunday. It was October 3, 1990, when the five states of the former East Germany joined the Federal Republic of Germany, formally ending the long division following World War II. More than three decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the consequences of reunification are still heavily contested. Disparities between eastern and western Germany persist, particularly in pay and wealth. Some eastern Germans also argue they still have too little recognition in national institutions.
