Ukraine has faced many difficult days since the Russian invasion more than three years ago. But none more difficult, according to its President, as the decision it faces now.
To either accept a deal which cedes its land and slashes its army, or lose the backing of its most important ally – and potentially force an even worse fate upon its battle-weary people.
The 28 point peace plan drawn up by America and Russia, without Ukraine’s involvement, has unsurpisingly got the backing of Putin tonight, suggesting who it really favours.
In a public address, President Zelensky pledged not to betray his people – saying the plan forces him to choose between American support and his country’s dignity. He’s been given until Thursday to make up his mind.
