Fifa defends its president Infantino

Fifa has defended its president Gianni Infantino, criticising the ‘ongoing effort’ to undermine the organisation. A statement from the football governing body says ‘speculation and insinuation should not be presented as fact’ and ‘repetition does not make an allegation true’.

It follows reports in the Telegraph that a female employee at Uefa received a six-figure sum after an alleged relationship with Infantino.

Uefa, the European football governing body, has confirmed a ‘departure payment’, saying ‘the payment was in line with regualtions that existed for departing staff at the time.’

A Fifa spokeman told the Telegraph Infantino strongly denies any allegations.
