French student protests spread and turn violent

Police have used tear gas to disperse student protesters in Paris, as demonstrations demanding more funding for French schools continue to spread. A barricade burned outside Voltaire High School on October 1, while in Lille protesters set fire to bins and electric bikes during a fourth consecutive day of unrest. Authorities say dozens of people have been injured. The protests have become a key issue in the campaign against President Emmanuel Macron, with far-left presidential hopeful Jean-Luc Mélenchon describing the government’s response as "repressive".
