Incredible aerial footage shows scale of wildfire on Suffolk coast

A major incident has been declared after a wildfire ripped through a coastal healthland.

The fire at Dunwich Heath, near Leiston in Suffolk, started just after 5.30pm on Wednesday after flames spread quickly in a south-west direction towards St James’s Church off Westleton Road.

Properties in the area have been evacuated but the exact number is not yet known.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service previously said preparations had been made for 200 caravans on the Cliff House Holiday Park near Dunwich to be evacuated.

They added night crews have also been focused on protecting properties including Coastguard Cottages and Mount Pleasant Farm area.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue service said there was currently no risk to Sizewell B nuclear power station from the wildfire.

In a statement on Thursday morning, the service said: “At this time there is no current risk to Sizewell B, due to the distance from the fire and the direction it is travelling (easterly).

“However, this is a live and dynamic situation and as a result any further updates will be shared accordingly.”
