Eyewitness video showed scuffles as authorities moved in to clear the protest, after police said the demonstration had continued beyond authorised hours.
But demonstrators and officers began shoving each other, and objects were thrown during the confrontation, which organisers say led to 37 injuries.
Portugal is facing a severe housing crisis, with Eurostat data showing the country recorded the EU’s fastest annual house price growth in the second quarter.
