Young people would be barred from going straight from school on to benefits under Tory plans to take a “tough-love” approach to the under-25s.
Kemi Badenoch said the benefits system is “unfair to the people who get up and go to work” as she unveiled the proposal ahead of the Conservative Party conference starting on Sunday in Birmingham.
Unemployed people aged 16-24 who had not worked continuously for six months would be unable to claim universal credit.
School or education leavers who did not have a job would be offered support through a Get to Work scheme, and would only be able to claim money if they took part in it.
They would have to attend job centres on a daily basis, and take part in work experience placements, training courses or community work schemes through local councils.
They would also have to take part in job searches and application workshops. Interview preparation sessions would be provided.
After six months on the programme, young people who were still without a job would receive only a basic subsistence allowance. #politics @itvnews
