Why Guyana's president wants King Charles to apologise for slavery

When the King arrives in the former British colony of Guyana later this month, he’ll face renewed demands for an apology and reparations over the UK’s shameful role in the slave trade.

Buckingham Palace has made clear that King Charles won’t be making a formal apology during his Royal Tour of three Caribbean countries.

But the country’s President has told ITV News that saying sorry is the crucial next step, in righting the wrongs of the past.

Irfaan Ali described slavery as the "darkest days of human history" and says Britain should feel guilt over its actions.

He says a country which benefitted immensely from slavery cannot now say it can’t afford financial reparations.
